Easy, convenient and fun camping… and all close to home!
For some families, the thought of going camping can be daunting. Where do we go, what do we take, and what can we expect when we get there?
Western Australia is filled with amazing places to visit, but if you’re starting out camping and want to stay a little closer to home, perhaps try some of these. Here’s a list of easy family camping spots all within a two-hour drive from Perth.
Camping Spots North of Perth
Guilderton Caravan Park is an easy drive at just 93km north of Perth, and sits across the road from the magnificent spot where Moore River meets the ocean! Toilet block, BBQ area and fully enclosed camper’s kitchen are available; and the family will love being able to swim or fish in the river or at the beach.
Explore the natural beauty of Western Australia’s Coral Coast and take a drive to Beachside Caravan Park. Approximately 198km north of Perth, Cervantes Beachside Caravan Park is renowned for its’ picturesque setting. Site facilities include powered sites, camper’s kitchen, shop/kiosk, toilets and showers, BBQs and a playground.
Or if you want a little more of an adventure, Sandy Cape, north Jurien Bay, is well worth the 230km drive from Perth. White sand, turquoise water, excellent fishing and safe swimming areas make this a great family camping area.
Family Camping South of the City
A popular and convenient camping spot is Lane Pool Reserve, Dwellingup. 100km south of Perth and located right on the Murray River, Lane Poole Reserve offers activities such as canoeing, bush walking, mountain bike riding, fishing and horse riding trails. Set up your tent and utilise the picnic tables, toilet and BBQ on hand; and enjoy being in nature!
Martin’s Tank, 129km South of Perth, is a hidden gem! Bring the family and make use of the gas BBQs and picnic tables, camp kitchen and toilet facilities on site. Martin’s Tank Lake provides beautiful scenery and wildlife, stunning views and photography opportunities.
Serpentine Falls Park Home and Tourist Village, 67km South of Perth, is nestled amongst the picturesque Darling Ranges. Central to all of the major attractions in the area and conveniently close to the city, this site features practical amenities such as cooking areas, showers and laundry facilities; and offers plenty of tourist attractions right nearby.
Belvidere campground is nestled among tuart forest near the edge of Leschenault Estuary, approx 150km south of Perth and just outside Bunbury. The beach is known for good 4Wdriving and fishing; and the inlet is popular for boating, kayaking, fishing and hiking. Toilets and BBQs available.
Potters Gorge campsite is on the shore of the Wellington Dam within Wellington National Park, East of Bunbury. Around 190km south of Perth, Potters Gorge boasts a shady Jarrah and Marri forest setting and caters for small, medium and large campervans or caravans. Fishing, canoeing and bushwalking are the main attractions; and the site has toilets, BBQs and a kiosk for convenience.
If you want to stay close to home and have all the conveniences but still enjoy real camping, Lake Leschenaultia is the place to go and is popular with families. Just 50km east of Perth, Lake Leschenaultia is the perfect spot for a Perth Hills family camping experience offering excellent campground facilities year round. Sandy beaches, canoe hire, kiosk, toilet facilities and powered sites are all an added bonus.
Camping is available in Avon Valley National Park, 77km north east of Perth. Enjoy panoramic views over the Avon Valley and the chance to see a wide variety of birds and wildlife! There are limited facilities and development within the Park making it ideal for visitors and campers looking for a more wilderness experience.
So whether you’re a complete beginner and looking for a camping experience that is not too rustic; or if you’re just after somewhere for a quick and easy getaway this weekend with the kids; there are plenty of places to check out that are convenient and easy to get to!
